Role of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED)
After revoking of department during 2007, the main role of PHED is to undertake and execute the CM directives / schemes on accelerated basis. The major functions of PHED in this regard are stated below:
- To provide safe drinking water to the communities
- To improve hygienic conditions by providing surface drains, brick pavement and sewerage system (sanitation)
- To provide technical assistance to other departments in sanitation and water supply
- To mobilize rural communities for sustainable operation and maintenance of water supply and sanitation schemes with technical assistance to user committees
- To check drinking water quality through chemical and bacteriological tests for urban / rural areas of the District
Water Testing Laboratories
Water Testing Laboratories under the vision of Government of the Punjab was established during 1965 and in continuation drinking water testing laboratories in all districts of Punjab were established during 2007. The main objective is to analyze the drinking water quality in urban as well rural areas where the department has provided this basic facility. The chemical analysis and bacteriological testing facility is provided at District Khanewal. The water testing facility for drinking purpose is provided to all the public and water samples providers from general public as well NGOs, TMA’s, etc. and tests are conducted free of cost.
