Mission and Objectives

The main objectives of Livestock Department are:

  • Prevention of diseases through free mass vaccination in cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goat and rural poultry
  • Provision of veterinary services
  • Provision of Artificial Insemination services
  • Work for the Prevention of Zoonotic Diseases to ensure public health
  • Farmers’ education and awareness for productivity enhancement
  • Food security and public health through provision of quality milk, meat, eggs etc.
  • Poverty alleviation through efficient service delivery
  • Execution of development schemes for the betterment of public health
  • “Propagation of Backyard Poultry for Increased Availability of Animal Protein to Counter Stunted Growth”
  • “Enhancing Beef Production Through Save the Buffalo Calves and Feedlot Fattening” 

Livestock as Economic Engine

Livestock is driving force for pre-dominant agrarian / rural economy of our country. The following points validate the beforementioned fact:

  • Livestock subsector, over the years has surpassed the crops subsector
  • Gross value addition during this FY has increased from Rs.1.384 billion to Rs.1.440 billion
  • In spite of its inheriting subsistence and structural flaws, this sector has shown a healthy growth of 4% during 2018 - 2019 as compared to the previous year
  • Poultry, is progressing at an impressive growth rate of 8-10% per annum since last few years
  • Pakistan has become 11th largest poultry producer in the world
  • Prime Minister’s Task Force under “Prime Minister’s Agriculture Plan”

Significance of District Vehari in Livestock

District Vehari has prime importance in Livestock described hereunder:

  • District Vehari falling in Neeli Bar in the hometown of Neeli Water Buffalo
  • The District is adjoining to District Sahiwal having Sahiwal Cow
  • Other breed of small ruminants like Beetal, Lohi are being reared successfully
  • It has well irrigated agricultural land that favors the Livestock Farming
  • Feed ingredients are comparatively cheap and abundant
  • During Eid-ul-Adha, this district provide sacrificial animals to big markets like Lahore and Karachi
  • Flora and Fauna also support the livestock in terms of shade and feeding
